If you need low voltage lines and WIFI for the new house I will volunteer to come down and do this for you! I can link the new house and the barn all together and get you excellent WIFI coverage outside as well. I would highly recommend networking your house from the beginning. Such a pain to do afterward when you realize that you need it.

Had to take a deep breath when I seen how small it is on the inside. ...But if it saves lives in a bad storm it would be worth being uncomfortable for a short time. Hope yall never have to use it!

Don't forget to get a powerful WiFi Router installed into the shelter. In case, God Forbid, anything should happen and the house gets completely destroyed, y'all get trapped in that little shelter and that's all that's left (which is, of course the point of the shelter), you can WiFi call for help. If you don't you may not have signal and could get trapped in there. We all love you way to much for that to happen. Chances are, that will never happen. Super unlikely. Good to be prepared though. 😊🤗

Glad you have your storm shelter installed. You should place a bucket with a lid on it down there for the just in case of bathroom.use if you ever have to use it and be there for a bit. Behind the stairs with a blanket or make.shift curtain for privacy.

My mom had a shelter similar to this put in her garage. She’s had many tornadoes jump her house in east Texas. A company from Oklahoma came down and cut the hole in the cement in her garage and did the install in just a couple hours. So fast!! I just worry when she goes in it, that if a tornado does hit her house, she won’t be able to get out. She also has zero service for any devices while she’s in there. So we have a system in place where she tells me she going in, and if I don’t hear from her within 15 minutes of an all clear given, I go looking for her. These shelters are so handy to have, though!

Do y’all not dig basements in Texas? It’s gonna be a few years but I’m also building on my family farm. I personally just can’t see a nice big house that don’t have a basement lol. We got a buttload of Rock here in Missouri, but still dig um in. Most are walkouts thought. Aside from West Texas, Missouri ain’t much different landscape wise. But hey, at least y’all don’t live in flatland Comminois.

Granger i would want a little more room after all you might be in that shelter for at least 5 minutes. when a emergency happens 1 minute is really long just think how long 5 minutes or 30 will be. i know how long a emergency minute is because one i used to be a EMT in law enforcement and off-course i had a personal emergency or two.

I was at the concert last night at Floore's in Helotes, TX and not only did you play some great music and have a awesome performance, but you said something that's going to stick with me for the rest of my life. You said something on the lines of life is like a dirt road, sometimes its broken, but there is beauty in it and keep on going on. These were words I need to hear, and I thank you for that. Thank you Mr. Smith for not only being a fantastic singer, but an awesome individual. - Josh

That's the first time I've ever seen a storm shelter. We have no need for them here in NZ. Just watching you go into it made me want to hyperventilate! I'm not good with small spaces. I hope you don't have to use it but definitely good to have it there if you need it.

    • highkicker11
      highkicker11

you dont need them yet would be more correct i think. here in the netherlands weather is getting closer and closer the point of spawing regular ef2 twisters and even a few ef3 whereas the most we used to have ef1 or efu.

  • Hap Newsom

One thing to consider having in the shelter is a very strong hydraulic jack. If a tornado or some disaster brings down the house, you do not want to be trapped beneath all the rubble a hydraulic Jack could still lift the door open even if there is considerable debris on top of it.

    • Rowdy Broomstick
      Rowdy Broomstick

I wouldn't have one like that myself because of so many stories about entrapment from the house and the house itself collapsing onto the door. The best kind are the one's you see dug outside the home with a vertical door and big dirt mounds protecting the entry or concrete

    • Chldof1TrueKng
      Chldof1TrueKng

That’s a good idea Hap. That was my main concern as well, what do you do when the house or a tree comes down on top of the door?

    • TAPWELDING

If you live in Texas you can't have a basement because of the water bed, that's why a sealed bunker is the best option

    • Bryan
      Bryan

I think I would have opted to have a small basement over the shelter. I know it is only for emergencies but a basement could be used for other things while still providing protection if needed.

      Kay H

I was thinking the same thing, but my moms areas was hit by a tornado last year and when your in an emergency situation all you think about it’s getting somewhere safe. The tornado ended up taking out my parents entire neighborhood. Sadly, 6 people died because they didn’t have a storm shelter or basement.

What happens if the house falls down on top of the storm shelter and you can’t get the door open from the debris laying on top of it Plus if it’s placed in the garage in a vehicle is over it seconds count when I storm blows up in the middle of the night. That’s why I went with a concrete vault safe room /Pantry with a steel door that opens in....
